- Sigmund Freud—the great man himself, suffered from panic disorders. It eventually forced him to research the cause and effects. His research probably laid the base to all we now understand about panic attacks and associated disorders and he wrote many articles on stress related problems, stress definition, anxiety and depression symptoms.
- Chloe Mandeley — Daughter of the famous Richard and Judy interview couple. Chloe has been competing in the ice-skating celebrity show. Her panic attacks started when she was around 20 years old and she has been trying to manage them with treatment from a therapist. Before skating for the show, she has suffered a full blown panic attack, and once, in the middle of the live-aired show, she experienced an attack during her routine.
- Donny Osmond — The famous singer, experienced his first panic attack in 1994 during a performance. The attack stopped him singing and made him feel as though he was going to pass out. He became scared of shopping centers and crowds. After working with a therapist, it was decided he suffered from cognitive behavioral therapy and treatment was successful.
- Barbara Streisand — The wonderful singer stopped singing in public, after a concert in Central Park in 1967. She forgot the words to several songs and suffered from a panic attack. It took her 27 years to summon up the courage to start live performances again. She started again in 1994, building up gradually from TV to small live audiences. Now, she can perform amazing concerts in Vegas. What a blessing for us that she was able to overcome her panic disorder. - Sir Lawrence Olivier — He needs no introduction. He actually never developed his panic disorder until the peak of his career. It just shows that panic attacks can appear at any stage of your life.
- Rebecca Gibney — Australian actress (Flying Doctors, Halifax FP, and much more) When interviewed in 1996, she related how she had suffered panic attacks. Once, she was in the middle of filming, realized she could not remember her lines, suffered sweating and anxiety breathing symptoms. She eventually had to leave the set. In the same year, attending the Logie Awards, Rebecca suffered a complete panic attack with shortness of breath, nausea, shaking, etc, all the physical symptoms of anxiety. She was unable to take her seat at the awards.
- Sally Field — Well known actress of more than 40 years, having won 2 Oscars and many other awards. She admits she has suffered from social phobia, eating disorders along with anxiety attacks most of her adult life. She believes her anxiety problems pushed her into her first marriage too quickly and helped to end her second marriage with Alan Greisman. She feels they were very different characters. Alan enjoyed social occasions while she wanted to stay at home most of the time to avoid public functions.
- Nicole Kidman — Well known actress. She admits she suffers extreme panic when it comes to Red Carpet functions. Nicole has breathing problems, her hands start shaking when confronted with important functions.
- William Scott — former weather reporter for the Today show. He tells of how he suffered a panic attack seconds before going on air, he couldn’t breathe and his mind was extremely confused. He suffered severe anxiety symptoms, so much so that the studio called a doctor as they were sure he was having a heart attack.
- Kim Bassinger — her first attack frightened her so much that she was home bound for several months until she had some therapy.
The list could go on for ever — Burt Reynolds, Cher, Carly Simon, Joan Rivers, Michael Jackson, Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, and even Abraham Lincoln. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
All these famous people through history with social anxiety disorder have managed to overcome their problems and go on to a much better life.
