Compulsive Behavior
Compulsive Behavior can be painfully and even embarrassingly disruptive in our every day life. So many people suffer from it that it is now the fourth most common mental disorder. Unbelievably, compulsive behavior is diagnosed as often as diabetes and asthma. It can stop you from being able to work, socialize, or even look after your family in the way you want to. You may have heard the term OCD, which is short for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and perhaps you are concerned enough to ask some hard questions - “Do I have OCD?” And, “What are causes of OCD?” This article will help you answer these questions.
First, what are symptoms of obsessive or compulsive behavior? A key is, that though you may want to stop it, even if you promise yourself or a loved one to change, the behavior has a mind of its own, and returns before you know it.
It can take its form in so many different ways -
- Excessive hand washing
- Hoarding
- Repeated checking
- Aversion to certain numbers
- Opening and closing doors a certain number of times before entering or leaving a room
- Walking up or down stairs in a certain way
- Lining up contents in cupboards or closets in an exact way
- Turning lights on and off and counting repetitions
- Checking and rechecking to make sure the house is locked
- Rituals required before certain actions
- Intrusive repetitive thoughts
The list goes on, but the point is that these compulsions bring stress and anxiety to your life, while normal habits bring a feeling of peace and order. There is a huge difference between the two. Intrusive thoughts in your daily life produce fear, worry apprehension and uneasiness which in turn trigger the compulsions.
What are causes of OCD? Much research has been done in recent years and frankly, it is still somewhat of a mystery. There are theories that some kind of brain dysfunction is at fault, though rest assured brain function and reasoning ability are not less than that of those without OCD. Other possible causes, or at least factors involved, seem to be genetics, brain chemistry, depression, trauma, even infection. Possibly there is a combination of these factors. So you see, it’s not your fault! The important thing is to do all that can be done to get relief.
If you are suffering from compulsive disorder, then it can affect your daily life with family, friends, and even work, and can cause you embarrassment. Sometimes people are unkind, do not understand your struggle with this, and will accuse you of having no will power. If they only knew!
Let’s take as an example, people who are compelled to lock up their home in a certain way when leaving. If they go out without doing it their certain way, then they may be in a state of panic the whole time they are out. Much as they may struggle to dismiss the need to go check, it perisists, and ruins the evening out.
Some believe they know exactly what caused their compulsions, but others are unable to pinpoint what started them. All they know is that they want to stop but cannot. But take heart, because there is help for you to get life back under control.
- There are therapists who specialize in OCD
- There are medications available from physicians and psychiatrists
