Coping with anxiety is a lot more difficult than most people think. First of all, there are different types of anxiety disorders. Most of them are based from irrational thinking and too much worrying.
For those who have anxiety disorder, panic attacks happen without warning. And when they do happen they are accompanied by headaches, nausea, nervousness, irrational fear, and sometimes tremors.
There are an estimated 20 million adults and children that suffer from some type of anxiety in America; you are not alone. Depending on the type of anxiety you deal with, there is probably are certain trigger.
When a panic attack strikes, there are few things that you can do to cope:
1. Relax – If you can try to relax, the symptoms of the attack will lessen. Most likely you won’t have a headache and sweating if you try to calm down. It is best to try to think about relaxing your body and deepen your breathing so that you are blocking out everything else.
Meditation is a great way of relaxing. Make it a part of your schedule, morning or night. Meditation is known to help reduce anxiety and stress. Find some time everyday to slow down.
2. Find the Appropriate Treatment – There are so many different ways of coping with anxiety. It is essential that you find the right treatment for you. Medication can help with the symptoms of anxiety, but there are usually side effects attached. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a great tool that has been known to help anxiety patients.
3. Consider Lifestyle Changes – How much do you exercise? Make sure that you are exercising at least a few days a week. Are there foods in your diet that aren’t healthy? When you cut down on sugary and processed foods, you will feel better too. Any mood altering substances, such as alcohol, cigarettes, or caffeine? These items can also trigger panic attacks.
4. Find Support – It isn’t a good idea to shell up and hide your emotions. Find a friend or family member to share your feelings with. You can also find support groups to help you.
5. Self Evaluation – Think about all the things that cause your panic attacks. Try to determine what sets them off. Think about possible solutions.
